  • IDENTIFICATION: Green, white and black heads with black bills, and brown bodies on the males; brown, spotted body and head with black bills on females
  • CONSERVATION STATUS: Least Concern - Population Trend Stable
  • DIET: Mostly plants, but does include insects
  • HABITAT: Wetlands, ponds, lakes, marshes and rivers
  • NESTING: Small depression on the ground, lined with grasses, reeds, cattails, and feathers, generally built away from water in tall grass or low shrubs
  • BEHAVIOR: Dabbling ducks that spend more time in water than on land
  • SPECIAL SKILLS: Swim and eat more plants than other dabbling ducks
  • SEASONS FOR VIEWING IN NORTH LOUISIANA: Winter
