About Swifts

Hummingbirds and swifts don’t look like they belong together. Hummingbirds are tiny, jewel-toned, and capable of hovering in place like miniature helicopters. Swifts are dark, cigar-shaped, and spend so much of their lives on the wing that some species literally never land except to nest. One fits in your palm. The other looks like a boomerang with a bad attitude. But despite appearances, hummingbirds and swifts are close relatives — members of the order Apodiformes, united by wing structure, flight physiology, and a shared commitment to doing things in the air that other birds can only dream about.The name Apodiformes comes from the Greek apous, meaning "footless," which is a slight exaggeration but captures the essential truth about this order: these birds are built for flying, not walking. Swifts have such tiny, weak feet that most species can’t perch on branches the way songbirds do — they cling to vertical surfaces or fly. Hummingbirds have functional feet but spend so much time hovering, chasing, and zipping between flowers that their relationship with the ground is essentially theoretical. If you combined the aerial time of all the hummingbirds and swifts in North Louisiana on a given summer day, the total flight hours would be staggering.

The North Louisiana Lineup

North Louisiana hosts three regular species in this group, each occupying a distinct niche in the aerial ecosystem. Ruby-throated hummingbirds are the headliners — the only breeding hummingbird in eastern North America and the species responsible for every hummingbird feeder purchase within 500 miles of here. Males flash an iridescent ruby-red gorget that looks black until the light hits it at exactly the right angle, at which point it explodes into color like someone flipped a switch. Females are the quieter operators — green above, white below, running the show while the males chase each other in territorial spirals. They’re present from March through October, with peak numbers during fall migration when waves of southbound hummingbirds descend on every feeder and trumpet creeper in the region.Chimney swifts are the cigar-shaped streaks that wheel and chatter over North Louisiana’s towns every summer evening. Before European settlement, they nested in hollow trees. Now they nest almost exclusively in chimneys, air shafts, and other vertical human structures, making them one of the most urban-dependent bird species in the region. Their evening roost flights — hundreds of swifts spiraling into a single chimney at dusk — are one of the great wildlife spectacles available in North Louisiana, and most people have no idea it’s happening above their heads.Vaux’s swifts are the rare visitors — smaller and slightly paler than chimney swifts, with a western range that occasionally overlaps into Louisiana during migration. Confirmed Vaux’s swift sightings in North Louisiana are uncommon enough to be noteworthy, but the possibility exists, and any birder watching a swift roost during migration should be aware that not every swift in the funnel is necessarily a chimney swift.

Flight Physiology

What connects hummingbirds and swifts isn’t just taxonomy — it’s the way their bodies are built for extreme flight. Both groups have proportionally large flight muscles relative to body weight, high metabolic rates, and wing structures adapted for sustained, high-energy flight maneuvers.Hummingbirds can hover, fly backward, fly upside-down briefly, and make instantaneous direction changes that would snap the neck of any other bird. Their wing joints are uniquely flexible, allowing the wing to rotate on both the upstroke and downstroke, which generates lift in both directions — the biomechanical trick that makes hovering possible. No other bird group can do this. Hummingbird flight is closer to insect flight than to typical bird flight, which is part of why they look so alien compared to everything else at the feeder.Swifts are built for endurance rather than agility. Their long, narrow, scythe-shaped wings are optimized for sustained, fast flight with minimal energy expenditure. They eat, drink, and even sleep on the wing — catching insects with gaping mouths during long gliding forays, sipping water by skimming the surface of ponds and rivers without landing, and taking brief microsleeps during high-altitude soaring flights. A chimney swift’s average day involves more continuous flight time than most birds log in a week.
