Fun Facts
Female hooded mergansers cause the most confusion because of the crest and similar wooded-water habitat. The bill settles it: mergansers have thin fish-catching bills; wood ducks have flatter dabbling bills. Female mallards lack the wood duck's white eye-ring and teardrop face pattern
"Watch closely, respect my space, and let my habitat explain the rest of the story."
Forget the boring hospital scene for wood ducks. While most babies enter the world quietly, wood ducks kick off life with Jump Day. Aix sponsa, the waterbird in bridal dress, nests in cavities 30 to 50 feet off the ground, and its ducklings survive a freefall on their first day alive.
North Louisiana’s wooded swamps, bottomland hardwood forests, and lake margins attract wood ducks year-round. They are common residents, they use nest boxes, and if you spend enough mornings near wooded water, you will meet one.
A Few More Facts
How they hunt and forage: Wood ducks feed on seeds, nuts, fruits, aquatic plants, duckweed, wild rice, and especially acorns in flooded timber. Animal food increases during breeding season. Females face extreme nutritional demand during egg-laying. Producing a 10-to-12-egg clutch requires intense invertebrate intake, and body condition drops visibly through the season. The beauty-pageant male gets the attention; the female does the hard accounting.

What Is the Wood Duck Often Confused With?
Male wood ducks wear a color scheme so implausible it takes a moment to accept as real: glossy green and purple head, swept-back crest, white facial stripes, red eyes, red bill, chestnut breast, iridescent back, yellow sides, and wings that flash blue and green. It looks excessive. It works anyway. Females are quieter but still distinctive, with gray-brown heads, white eye-rings, white teardrop patches, and a crest. In flight, wood ducks hold the head higher than the body and maneuver through trees with a level of agility that feels unreasonable for a duck.
