Hand-picking during the nymphal stage works best. The jet-black nymphs with bright stripes cluster in groups of 20 to 50 on individual plants, easy to spot and easy to collect into a bucket of soapy water. Waiting until the adults disperse across the yard makes removal much harder.
Do lubbers live in all of North Louisiana?
Populations concentrate in the southern and eastern parishes (Avoyelles, Rapides, Catahoula, Concordia) and along the river valleys where winter temperatures stay milder. The northern parishes may see occasional individuals but don't reliably support breeding populations.
What makes that hissing sound?
The lubber forces air and defensive froth through the thoracic spiracles (breathing pores) when harassed. The hissing accompanies the toxic froth and warns predators that the next step in the interaction involves chemistry the predator won't enjoy.
