The sawfly lied about everything. The name says "fly." The animal says "wasp." The suborder Symphyta sits within the order Hymenoptera — the ants, bees, and wasps — making sawflies about as closely related to actual flies as a chicken nugget resembles a live chicken. They share a common ancestor somewhere back in deep evolutionary time, and that ancestor probably wouldn't recognize either group. But the common name stuck, and now an entire suborder of primitive wasps walks through the world wearing a name that belongs to a completely different order of insects.

The "saw" part, at least, tells the truth. Female sawflies carry an ovipositor — the egg-laying appendage — shaped like a tiny, serrated saw blade. They use this tool to cut slits into plant tissue (leaves, stems, or wood depending on the species), then deposit eggs inside the cuts. The saw-like ovipositor gives the group its common name and represents one of the most reliable identification features for the suborder. If the insect appears wasp-like but lacks the pinched "wasp waist" between thorax and abdomen, carries four wings, and the female sports a saw-edged ovipositor, you're looking at a sawfly.
